Frequently Asked Questions

What is IET Connect?

IET Connect is the IET’s Benevolent Fund. It exists to support members, former members and their dependants through difficult times. It can help with a wide range of issues including legal advice, unemployment / redundancy support, illness, disability and caring responsibilities. If the issues impact on normal daily we can help or can identify someone who can.

Who can they help?

We can help anyone who is, or was a member of the IET (or IEE) and their dependants.

What do you mean by “dependant”?

A dependant can be a partner or child or another family member such as a parent for whom the member has caring responsibilities.

Can you help members of IET staff?

YES, if they are a member of the IET.
All IET staff are eligible for free membership, paid for by the IET, after three months.

How long does someone need to have been a member of the IET?

ONE DAY.

Do they have need to have donated to IET Connect?

NO. We will not look to see if they have donated to us or not.

Can you help people outside of the UK?

YES. We can help anyone, in any location.

Can you provide crisis relief e.g. Cyprus or the earthquake in New Zealand?

YES. We will do all we can to help members who are caught up in unforeseen circumstances and need assistance.

Can you provide emergency support e.g. after a fire or flood?

YES.

What kind of help do you offer?

The kind of help we can offer depends on individual circumstances. Typically we provide legal advice, financial help towards a wide range of purposes such as equipment, care, emergencies and essentials, as well as outplacement for people needing employment support (usually due to redundancy).

Why do some decisions take longer than others to make?

There are many reasons why some decisions take longer the others. The most common is that paperwork for grants has not been returned by the applicant. We aim to deal with all cases as swiftly as possible but if we don’t receive documentation we cannot complete the process.

When can people contact you?

The IET Connect Helpline is open 9.30am – 5.00pm weekdays. Outside of these hours there is an answerphone and messages will be responded to the next working day.

How do I refer someone to you?

Ask the person you wish to refer if they are happy for you to pass their details on to us.

If yes, email or phone through their name and contact number and we will make contact them.

If no, provide them with our contact details and encourage them to make contact directly.

What happens when I refer someone to IET Connect?

If you provide us with their details we will make contact with them to find out how and if we can help.

If I refer someone how long will it take for you to contact them?

We aim to be in touch on the day we receive the referral or the next working day if this is not possible. If a case is particularly urgent, let us know and we will try to respond sooner.

Will anyone at the IET know I have referred someone?
